Association of Anthroposophical Bookshops and Publishers
Bochum, 12 May (NNA) - An Association of Anthroposophical Bookshops and Publishers was established in Bochum on 9 May 1999. According to the Association, 22 retail bookshops and 5 publishers agreed on cooperative and constructive contacts among one another. The new Association, which wishes to promote the exchange of views and information with relevant initiatives both within Europe and beyond, said: 'Given the emergence of far-reaching structural changes brought about by new technology and the changing economic climate, we aim to develop ideas for future co-operative ventures and mutual support.' It further announced that working groups had already been set up to look at the following broad subject areas: advertising/public relations/corporate identity, EDP, second-hand books, joint trade-fair 2000 exhibition, sharing of financial resources, and international and EU contacts - and that these were still open for interested parties to join. A further 38 bookshops and 23 publishers in Germany and elsewhere (A, CH, F, UK, S, N, PL, CAN, BRAS) had already expressed interest in being involved. The Association said it had been established with the approval of Manfred Schmidt-Brabant, the head of the social sciences section at the Goetheanum, Switzerland, and with the Goetheanum's practical support. A next meeting is planned for early September 1999. London, 11 May (NNA) - “What can we do to stop the war in Yugoslavia and end the train of events which led to it”? This was the question which people involved in the anthroposophical movement in many European countries worked on together during the Easter conference at the International Cultural Centre of Achberg. As reported in the weekly journal “Das Goetheanum”, the fruits of this work were formulated as an appeal. The full text of it, from which extracts are reproduced below, can be obtained from the Achberg Centre. '[…] Therefore we call on all our fellow Europeans to gather in the open, in silence, wherever you happen to be, on Sunday 23 May 1999 between 21.30 and 22.00 Central European Summer Time (adjusted for different time zones), so as to express through the largest imaginable public show of unity our firm purpose: peace for Kosovo, for Belgrade and Novi Sad! All who have been displaced must be able to return to their homes and live there under the rule of law and in freedom. By taking half an hour for once to collect our thoughts, uniting our thinking, feeling and purpose as a European community, and focusing strongly on the unifying idea of peace, this idea can become a real force in the world - and thus a decisive help in solving the problems and underlying causes which have led to the present conflicts and crises. […] This silence can become a powerful impetus for lasting peace. The longing for peace, through reconciliation, tolerance and respect for the human dignity of each and everyone, dwells - we are certain - in the inner core of every individual. It dwells too in those who, whether stubborn, blind, misled or simply mistaken, are today carrying out inhuman acts. We call on our fellow human beings in the Balkans, especially the people of Yugoslavia, to distance themselves from the forces which sow hatred, enmity and violence, and to follow a common path towards regard for human rights, national and political democracy, intellectual and cultural freedom, and economic and social solidarity. These are recognised by all as the foundation for building a shared European identity in the 21st century in which human values can take their rightful place. As Bertolt Brecht said (in his 'Song of Solidarity): Once people themselves start talking, they'll soon see eye to eye. They will indeed! But the first step is for all to lay down their weapons and relinquish violence!
