New guide to Camphill communities / Neues Camphill-Handbuch

By Christian von Arnim

London, 2 October (NNA) - Finding the right placement in the independent sector for people with disabilities can be a difficult job for parents, social workers or education authorities.

That job has now been made easier with the launch at the end of September of a comprehensive “Guide to Camphill Communities in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland”. As a single source of information about Camphill centres, the guide provides a convenient way to identify the most appropriate Camphill Community for anyone seeking such a placement.

It also provides background on the Camphill approach, details of training available for co-workers and students and contact information for a variety of associated organisations.

Camphill, which celebrates its 60th anniversary next year, now boasts 40 establishments in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, providing a home for approximately 1,700 people with special needs.

Growth in the UK and Eire has been due largely to new ventures established in association with local authorities, health boards, housing associations and other bodies responsible for the care and quality of life of people with disabilities. In Scotland, Camphill communities account for about seven percent of the country's disability placements, while throughout the UK Camphill is one of the largest providers of this service to the Department of Health and Social Security.

As a worldwide movement, there are now 100 Camphill establishments in 21 countries ranging from Botswana and India to Russia and the USA.
