Demeter conference and annual general meeting in Alfter

Darmstadt, 17 November (NNA) – Agricultural producers, processors and retailers working on a bio-dynamic basis will meet for the general meeting of Demeter Germany in Alfter near Bonn on 20 November.

According to Demeter, the oldest ecological producers’ association is having to reconsider its strategic direction against the background of a particularly difficult year for agriculture due to drought and falling sales in the organic sector. In an address, the executive board member of Demeter International, Änder Schanck from Luxembourg, will speak about the demands of the current time and their consequences for bio-dynamic products, the organisation said in its press release.

The debate will be continued at the annual conference, which this year deals with the subject of “Demeter: reconciling the demands of production and society”, which is being held by Demeter jointly with the “Forschungsring für Biologisch-Dynamische Wirtschaftsweise” bui-dynamic research group. The conference will take place on the evening of 20 and on 21 November.

How can bio-dynamic agriculture in the Demeter context develop in future when price pressures, ecological changes and social expectations have to be reconciled? That is the issue to be discussed jointly by representatives from agriculture and processing, retailers and consumers, the Demeter statement said.

Dr. Peter Schaumberger new vice president of Demeter International

Darmstadt, 17 November (NNA) – The agricultural economist Dr.  Peter Schaumberger has been appointed as the new vice president of Demeter International, the oldest agricultural producers’ association announced today. He was nominated by the executive board after Michiel Rietveld from the Netherlands retired after six years in office.

According to Demeter, the chief executive of Demeter Germany will now be responsible in the international organisation for trademark protection and lobbying in Brussels, where Demeter International maintains an office. His work would also continue to focus on international market issues, a job he had done previously as an executive board member, the organisation said in a statement.

Demeter is the only ecological association which has built up a global network of independently certifying organisations. In this context unified standards are applied to the production of Demeter products, recognised as quality leaders in the organic field. Demeter International represents more than 3000 producers in almost 40 countries worldwide.
