Of eggs and football

Uelzen-Klein Süstedt, 31 March (NNA) – It sound like an early April Fool’s joke. According to a press release from the bio-dynamic label organisation Demeter, consumers in Germany can now have their breakfast eggs sent by mail: “And the best thing is, the packaging is so secure that you won’t get scrambled egg.” (But what if you like scrambled egg?)

This innovative scheme from the bio-dynamic Bauckhof farm at the edge of the Luneburg Heath is made possible by means of packaging specially developed for the farm which has undergone special testing: “We played football with the filled cartons and most of the eggs survived even that,” Demeter quotes farmer Carsten Bauck as saying.

And it gets even better. The special packaging not only provides protection against breakage, “the temperature is also maintained at a low level so that complete enjoyment of the bio-dynamic eggs is guaranteed.”

Even the hens can be happy. They are given 100 percent Demeter or organic feed and, thanks to mobile henhouses – a further innovation of the farm – always have a green outdoor area. According to Demeter, the henhouses are pulled to a fresh site in the large field each month like huge sledges so that the busily pecking and scraping birds always have fresh territory available.

Football with eggs, henhouse sledges – sounds a bit far fetched. But apparently no April Fool’s joke after all (or a very sophisticated one). The eggs are for sale via the Bauckhof website at 3.50 euros per carton. Whether purchasers eat the eggs or play football with them is left up to them.
