New Centre for Research on Social Climate at University of Kent

CANTERBURY (NNA)- A new centre to investigate how social conventions frame and constrain human behaviour has been established at the University of Kent in the UK.

According to its director, Dr.  Ulrich Weger, the aim of the “Centre for Research on Social Climate” in the School of Psychology in Canterbury is to provide a “platform for various research and teaching activities”.

The centre will investigate themes such as they way in which social conventions and metaphors - such as the human mind as a computer or the definition of the human being as an animal - influence our view of the human being and how they “inform and shape people’s behaviour”.

“In fact, such conventions can be quite one-sided, yet they influence our views, our theories and our understanding of a given phenomenon,” Dr.  Weger said. “They are not necessarily a reflection of how things really are. Instead, they often expressed how we would like or want to see things,” he added.

The centre will also address issues of social climate in a more general sense. In this context it provides room for research into the methods of scientific discovery, in particular the opportunities and limitations of the experimental approach.

The centre will provide a platform for various research and teaching activities. It hosts a student discussion group and a public lecture series entitled “The nature and value of initiative”, starting on 19 November.

The Centre will also host an interdisciplinary conference on “Consciousness and Intentionality: New Questions and Approaches” in August 2010.

New online anthroposophical medical library

PHOENIXVILLE, PA, USA (NNA) - Doctors, therapists and patients seeking information about anthroposophical medicine in English now have a new online resource at their disposal.

The website, AnthroMedLibrary (www.anthromed.org), is sponsored by the Physicians' Association for Anthroposophic Medicine (PAAM) in the United States and maintained by the health magazine Lilipoh Publishing. Its aim is “to create and continually improve a comprehensive international resource on anthroposophical medicine and therapy and improve public awareness of anthroposophical medicine,” Lilipoh says in a press release.

The fully searchable website, which is free to use, currently contains over 500 lectures, articles, books, clinical papers, and research papers. However, some advanced clinical materials appropriate for clinicians only require a password which is available to anthroposophical doctors and other international anthroposophical medical organisations, Lilipoh says.

AnthroMedLibrary is also keen to encourage additions to the site: “A warm invitation is extended to doctors and therapists who wish to submit their work for publication on the site, or have recommended additions,” the press release says.
