More farms join Demeter International

STREICHSMÜHLE (NNA) - Several new enterprises have been certified by the bio-dynamic standards body Demeter International, adding grain, tea and dates, among other things, to the range of products from all over the world which carry the label of the organisation. Two trade agreements were also concluded, the Demeter press office said.

Demeter International looks after bio-dynamic enterprises in countries which do not yet have their own Demeter certification organisation.

One of the new contractual partners supplying dates is “Nour Oasis“ in Tunisia. In India, too, the “Ambootia” und “Mullootar” tea plantations have been joined by Tea Group Export in being recognised Demeter suppliers.

In Eastern Europe, there has been significant interest in converting to bio-dynamic methods of cultivation, Demeter said, with enterprises from Hungary, for example, supplying Demeter grain.

The Wisniewski fruit farm in Poland has now been recognised as converting to Demeter methods. It produces raspberries which are frozen directly on the farm. Sandthorn, sloe and wild rose (Rosa rugosa) cultivation is also being converted to Demeter.

Another farm undergoing conversion to bio-dynamic cultivation is “AGRO-CRC” in Tunisia which grows jojoba bushes on 287 hectares, among other things, and in Asia a wholesale contract was concluded with “Blue Oasis” in Malaysia to supply Demeter juice.

About 14,000 hectares in 20 countries, mainly in Eastern Europe, South and Central America, North Africa and India, are currently Demeter certified. Products range from bananas in the Dominican Republic via grain from Hungary and rice in India to dried fruits and nuts from Turkey. They form part of more than 105,000 hectares and approximately 3,500 farms which are cultivated using Demeter guidelines.

Farms currently using such methods and working towards certification can be found in Ecuador (bananas), Paraguay (cane sugar), India (fruits, vanilla), Sri Lanka (tropical fruits), Uganda (tropical fruits and spices), Greece (olive oil), the Czech Republic (grain), Hungary (arable), Poland (fruit and arable farms) as well as Uruguay (citrus fruits).
